Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Christianity all recognize specific individuals as saints within their traditions. In the West, sainthood is often something only the Catholic Church could officially acknowledge. However, this type of monopoly over conferring sainthood is not typical for most religions, and we reject the Catholic Church's standards on sainthood.
In Hinduism, for example, there is no formal canonization process for sainthood. Those viewed as the most pious and virtuous in their lives and afterward are called saints. Some of these saints may be seen as incarnations of deities or simply profound spiritual sages, teachers, and philosophers.
The Romanist tradition has many such saints and sages, and we recognize them with formal feast days throughout the year. These are special days on which we offer food to the purified souls of these divine beings. Since these saints have transcended the need to reincarnate into a human body, we can call on their spirits to help us in times of need and help guide our souls toward the Divine.
Here is a short list of individuals we recognize as Saints of our tradition.
Proclus
Giordano Bruno, the Martyr
Hypatia of Alexandra, the Martyr
Aristotle
Thomas Taylor
Gemistus Plethon
Julian, the Emperor and Philosopher
Julian the Chaldean and Julianus the Theurgist
Porphyry
Plotinus
There are also those who we revere as Divine. These individuals are higher than saints in their closeness to the divine but still below the Gods.
Hercules
Romulus (Quirinus)
Plato
Iamblichus
Hermes Trismegistus
Pythagoras
Orpheus
In addition to these spiritual teachers and Heroes, we recognize several Roman emperors as deified. The status of some of the emperors as deified may be up for debate.
Julius Caesar
Augustus
Marcus Aurelius
We have no formal canonization process so every Romanist can form their own opinion about these topics. Regardless, it is important that we treat our most holy sages and saints with the respect and honor they deserve.
For the Peace of the Gods
Glad to see Marcus Aurelius up there! Did a course on Stoicism recently and would say he is absolutely someone people should reflect on.
