Daily Prayer III
Oh noble progeny of All-father, Jove, and Being,
Benevolent rulers under his command, foreseeing.
Guide us with justice, in your esteemed reign,
As we follow laws, right and dear, not in vain.
-
May our obedience align with your noble decree,
Laws divinely crafted for humanity to see.
O gods, illuminate our path with celestial light,
Straighten our minds, fashioned in nature's delight.
-
Grant us the harmony of well-ordered living,
As we celebrate great Jove, eternally giving.
In reverence, we seek your guiding grace,
Oh divine offspring, in this mortal space.
Daily Meditation
"Do not deem that which is not shameful to be evil.”
—Sextus
We know when we are doing something evil because it brings shame into our souls. This shame is our guide for knowing we have made an error. For this reason, Pythagoras instructed his students to never do anything shameful in public or private. He knew that we often would try to commit acts that are shameful and thus evil in private, thinking we could somehow escape the guilt of doing wrongful acts. In truth, we only internalize and hide our guilt in private. However, if something is not worthy of shame, we should not call it evil. Preserving our natural sense of shame is how we keep ourselves attuned to evil. Those who are shameless have lost any sense of good or evil.
Monthly Ascesis
Developing a practice of chanting prayers is a powerful and effective way to create stillness in our souls, allowing us to behold God's presence in our lives.
This month, begin chanting the short prayer below. Start with just a few repetitions, for example, 10-15. Then, gradually increase the number over the month. When you reach a higher number of chants, say 100-200 per day, your mind will begin to quiet down, and a sense of stillness in your mind and soul will increase. Following your chants, take a moment to rest in the newfound stillness and keep your mind clear of thoughts for as long as you can.
